I have been working on some pencil studies of Conversano Mima, a friend’s 20 year old Lipizzan stallion at White Horse Vale Lipizzans in Goldendale, Washington. The studies are very different. The first is a dynamic expression of horse power, while the other is a formal portrait. Because the drawings are so different, the approach to these paintings suggests different techniques and strategies. The next step is to test out some of my ideas with watercolor.

I have been a lifelong rider and horse lover. I got my first "horse" at a yard sale; it was a pony actually. It was sometime in the early 60's. I was in 3rd or 4th grade. The pony was perhaps $10. My sister, brother, and I pooled our money and led him home. At the time my parents were traveling, and my Uncle Bill promptly made us return it. (stay tuned...more to come...)

Conversano Mima is absolutely Magnificent!! Can;t decide which is my favorite? I love them both and especially all the detail. Bravo….super job!
Thank you. I love to draw as much as I enjoy the painting process. Drawing is about research, and I learn so much from going through that exercise before I paint. I will check out the information you sent about the latex mask.

Awesome studies! I love the sense of movement in the first study.
your sketches are so beautiful, you should be making a bundle by selling them.
