A longing for excitement can be satisfied without external means within oneself: For creating is the most intense excitement one can come to know.  Anni Albers

In these times of voluntary isolation, with art centers shuttered, we still have a strong need to engage with art and feed our souls.  To that end, I have developed an online course to help you use color and composition to elevate your artwork.  In this course you will gain fluency and control over color for dynamic expression.  You will also empower your artwork with strategic arrangements of visual elements to better communicate with your audience.  This online course is designed for you to work at your own pace in the medium of your choice!  Choose a medium that you have familiarity in expressing yourself, be it paint, pastels, fiber/fabric, mixed media/collage, photography, etc.

The course is presented in 7 downloadable modules, with several exploratory exercises in each module.  Each module begins with art theory to guide you in making decisions for placement, sparking emphasis, generating rhythms, creating harmony, understanding balance, etc.  You work at your own pace, exploring each segment as deeply as desired.  Unlimited instructor feedback and individual support will be available by video phone calls, email, and texting for a full year from time of your enrollment.  If you can open and send emails and share photos through text messages, you have the technology skills to participate in this class.   All skill levels welcome from novice to experienced artists.  By the end of this class, you will have greater mastery of color and composition for enhanced creative expression.  Make your color sing and your design dazzle!

More Small Painting Offerings

As stated in my last post, working small allows the artist to try many ideas in a short amount of time with low pressure resulting in a variety of free, expressive works.  These exercises are immensely satisfying stretching the artist, expanding skills, and deepening knowledge.

In this post I share new  paintings in the 1/8 sheet format. They are framed 14″ x 11″ in the Swiss clip format, with mat, foam core backing, and glass.  All are available for $115, including shipping.  These paintings are offered as #artistsupportpledge artworks.

Artist Support Pledge

Artists make their living by showing and selling their art and by teaching art technique-based workshops or art courses. With the Covid19 pandemic, art centers have been shuttered, galleries closed, exhibitions and classes canceled.  Avenues for generating income closed for artists when the art centers and galleries closed their doors.  As art galleries and centers begin to reopen, attendance is sparse, so support for artists continues to be critical.

During the quarantine, British artist, Matthew Burrows conceived of a platform where artists can share and sell their artwork to stimulate the art market and directly benefit other artists.  Through Instagram, artists post images of their work with the pledge that each time the artist makes $1000 in sales, the artist will commit to using 20% of their earnings to purchase another artist’s work.  Burrows’ concept creates a sustainable “micro-culture and economy” to generate income and immediacy.  Along with offering my small artworks on Instagram as part of the Artist Support Pledge, I am also offering them on Facebook and this WordPress website.  To learn more, read How a hashtag caused a surge of optimism for artists on Instagram

All of the artwork featured on my website is promised for the #ArtistSupportPledge in 2020.

Color studies exploring the figure/ground relationship.  Birds are cool with a warm background, while the fish are warm with a cool background.  Mixing wet-into-wet, colors blend seamlessly offering variety within the color scheme.

Nature gives me serenity.  It is a source of inspiration, as well as a refuge.

Small Artworks: Simple Pleasures, Sweet Treasures

#artistsupportpledge These little gems are selling quickly. Order yours today before they are gone!

UPDATE: These paintings are selling quickly.  Secure yours before they are all gone!

Working small allows an artist to try many ideas in a short amount of time.  These experiments give results quickly, generating prolific creative energy.  Each investigation leads to more questions…  What if I do this?  Can I push that?  How can I control this?  Good results are possible from working small because the artist is freer to express and explore.  Each inquiry stretches the artist, expanding skills and knowledge.

Using a variety of formats, I embarked on small artistic studies delving into color theory, compositional questions, and mark-marking with a variety of brushes.  Each group of studies investigates a set of variables.  All are offered as #artistsupportpledge artworks.

Aboriginal Inspiration for Earth Day

This spring, as my community was on “lock down,” and we began to practice social distancing, the earth awoke in a splendor of color and new growth.  Without the distractions of daily life, a greater awareness of the incredible beauty of my environment blossomed.  The need to express this beauty resulted in the painting, Colorado Songlines, inspired by Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime Paintings.  Like all native peoples, the Australian Aboriginals have great reverence for the Earth.  I was drawn to the grid-like symmetry of their Dreamtime paintings, which are a visual manifestation of the ritual migratory walk-about, called “Songlines.”  Each Songline describes the ceremonial path one follows.  As one walks, one sings the Songline way, recounting landmarks, ancestor deeds, and the oral history of one’s unique tribe.  If a Songline is a set of verbal directions, then a Dreamtime painting can be called the map.

My painting is inspired by these ideas.  I made modifications to the process and the Dreamtime compositions  to create a painting uniquely my own.  Water is the lifeblood of my landscape, as I live on a high desert mesa, surrounded by mountains which capture snowfall and channel the melt water to thirsty lands below.  A network of canals and arroyos flow through adobe hills to nurture the fields stitched into a patchwork of farmland and wild lands.  I exaggerated the scale of the canals to reflect their importance to the landscape.  The rings in the adobe hills convey the contour lines of the landscape, just as one find on a topo map.  Colorado Songlines offered for purchase $115, as part of the #artistsupportpledge.  It arrives framed with 14″ x 11″ white archival mat, foam core backing, under glass in a Swiss clip frame system.  This classic contemporary framing system puts the emphasis on the artwork, not the frame.  You can purchase this painting or commission a Dreamtime painting of your special place; (Dreamtime paintings available in a wide range of sizes.)

05/16/2020     Headed for Home is a story about partnership.  The skies have turned dark.  A lone cowboy and his equine partner work in tandem to bring home the herd.  I encountered this scene several years ago, grabbing a quick photo as I intended to paint it one day.

This is the week I revisited this inspiration.  For this large studio painting, I began with a detailed study in graphite to work out the composition. Note how the perspective, as well as the placement of the bovine forms draw your eye into the painting and your imagination into the story.  I took my time to develop the forms, as well as setting the atmosphere.  Drawing is 11″x15″ in graphite.

Originally, I thought I would paint this composition as a “quarter-sheet” watercolor.  After the drawing was complete, I realized it needed to be much larger to do justice to the subject and the setting.  I doubled the size of the drawing, blocking in the basic forms on a “half-sheet” Arches 140# watercolor paper.  I worked on it in three settings, as the focus to paint it required rest periods.

Headed for Home, watercolor painting on 140# Arches mould-made paper, matted and  backed with foam core.  Shipped in an archival crystal bag, this painting is ready for your 28″ x 21″ frame upon arrival.  Art collectors: all paint, paper, and framing materials used to create this painting are of archival quality.  Accepting major credit cards or PayPal.  $600   (Shipping included in price.)

Headed for Home, graphite drawing, 11″x15″  is offered on 75# archival paper, shipped matted with foam core backing in a crystal bag, and ready for your 16″x20″ frame, $100. (Shipping included in price.)

Raven Series

Raven.1The gliding  shape of a raven evokes a sense of freedom and grace.  Known for their wily intelligence, ravens are attributed with prophecy.  Today in these times of quarantine and isolation, it seems prophetic that I focused on the raven’s essence of freedom and possibility as I began my Raven Series in early winter.  These images in pastel and watercolor arouse sensations of liberty and optimism through flight.  Art gives me the language to communicate my aspirations and dreams.  Through art I can soar high above this uncertain world.  (Pictured left: “Soar”     Pictured above:  “Winging It”   Both images–framed watercolors, 15″ x 12″  $175; image size 10″ x 7″

Raven.3

Like ravens- I, too, have an affinity for shine and glitz.  I pushed my final piece with mixed media, adding shiny gold acrylic and gel ink. Pictured right:  “Glide”   mixed water-media , framed 15″ x 12″  $175; image size 10″ x 7″

Framed Pastel Ravens:  20″ x 16″ (image size 14″ x 10″)  $350

Because of the size, these paintings cannot be shipped framed in glass.  They are shipped with mat and foam core backing in archival clear bags ready for your 16″ x 20″ frame.  Price includes shipping. Please complete this form to reserve your painting. Then pay using your PayPal account, or you can use your credit card by hitting the card icon below.
