Demo #2

Besides the landscape demo, I created a surreal composition of Lipizzan horses frolicking in the moonlight.  This painting employs a number of unusual characteristics, resulting in a modern painting, though rendered in traditional representational imagery of the 3 foot phases of the canter: (hind leg strike off, diagonal pair on the ground, and foreleg lead pushing into the suspension phase.  The suspension phase was not included, as it would have made this composition crowded.)

First, the moon was pushed forward to become the fourth character in the painting.  Second, I changed the color scheme to warm, though night paintings are usually portrayed  in cool colors.  Finally, I changed the format from the traditional horizontal format depicting a group of running horses to a vertical.  The hard edges resulting from the poured technique, combined with the vertical format gives this painting the flavor of an Oriental woodblock print.

Conversano Mima as poured watercolor composition

Life is busy.  At the end of the month, I will give a demo at the local Montrose Visual Arts Guild for poured watercolor techniques.  Later in the spring, (TBA date in June), I will present a 2 day workshop in the technique at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts.  I did complete Conversano Mima in the poured technique.  I had planned to bring it to my demo, but I liked it so well I hung it in the Artists of the West Elks show, hanging this month in Gunnison (Colorado) at the Center for the Arts.  The portrait of Mima’s head does not lend itself to poured watercolor.  With all the detail, it will be a conventional painting with brushwork.

A Few Pages from my Sketchbook

I have been working on some pencil studies of Conversano Mima, a friend’s 20 year old Lipizzan stallion at White Horse Vale Lipizzans in Goldendale, Washington.  The studies are very different.  The first is a dynamic expression of horse power, while the other is a formal portrait.  Because the drawings are so different, the approach to these paintings suggests different techniques and strategies.  The next step is to test out some of my ideas with watercolor.

The Lipizzan Rescue- more of the story

     Living is a constant source of interesting connections, if we are open & aware to how life is interconnected.  Sometimes painting gives us interesting connections too.  Several years ago, the Spanish Riding School performed on a US tour to honor the veterans who participated in the rescue of the Lipizzans from Czechoslovakia during World War II.  My daughter and I met my dad in Houston to see an SRS performance.  While in Houston, my dad related his part in the Lipizzan rescue of WW2.
     Since all the breeding mares of the Spanish Riding School were in Czechoslovakia and all the stallions were in Austria, it seemed the breed was doomed.  The Russian army was advancing upon Hostau, Czech, toward the large stud where the 300 Lipizzan mares, along with other prize horses from Europe’s breeding elite were stabled, with the intention of using the livestock for food rations.   My…
