Gallery Update: the Blue Pig

The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade looks very festive with an array of fine artwork.  Kay has designed a Christmas corner where you can find handcrafted ornaments, Christmas cards, and other holiday-themed work.  Check out my origami horses, folded with metallic washi paper from Japan and hung with beaded wire hooks.  If you are a horse lover, you will find a collection of holiday horse Christmas cards from my original watercolor paintings.

The center of the gallery features the member artist show, “This Little Piggy,” a collection or miniature artworks suitable for gift giving.  My offering for this show is a collection of mixed media collages designed around prints from my original watercolor paintings.  Executed in a variety of themes from western landscape, horses, flowers, wild life, and Japanese themes, there is something for every decor and taste.  These small works measure 7.5″ square.  They are handcrafted on sturdy laminated paper substrate, embellished with ink, paint, and found objects.  As a prototype to the iconic collages showing at the Gunnison Arts Center, these smaller collages are offered at $20 through December.   More collages are on display in my “gallery pod.”

Holiday Market Sampler: “Before Breakfast”

"Why I've imagined at least six things before breakfast."
“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”   -Alice; Lewis Carroll from Alice in Wonderland

“BEFORE BREAKFAST”

Mixed media collage on board was designed from a drawing in my sketchbook and printed on archival Reeves paper.  I see my collages as iconic with references and realia enhancing the original artwork.  For this piece, I included a tiny Queen of Hearts playing card and the key Alice is too tiny, and then too big to use.  The March Hare’s pocket watch was made from copper wire and bead, antiqued chain, and a metal watch face.  The border references Alice’s very psychedelic journey to Wonderland.  8” square panel  $40

“Lock, Stock, and Barrel” for MVAG special category, “Junque”

Last year Barb Haynie and I created a body of work for our traveling show, “High Point.”  Along with our paintings, we also created several found objects/”junk metal”/mixed media sculptures.  One of the pieces I created was a horse from a lock and key, which I called “Key to My Heart.”  Instead of selling that small horse, I developed a larger sculpture piece around it for this year’s Montrose Visual Artists Guild special category, “Junque.”

After searching the antique stores for old locks, I was able to find five more, but only three had keys.  The other two took some work to open, using a drill, a hammer, and ingenuity.  (A big thank you to my patient husband, whose muscle power and tool shop helped me get them open.)  The next step was to develop each horse’s personality with wirework and beads.  I arranged the legless horses in groups around the base of an old wine barrel, using the Fibonacci sequence of 1-2-3.  After drilling the oak of the wine barrel, I was able to attach each horse to its legs, which resulted in the small herd coming to life.

This work can be viewed at Camelot Gardens during the Montrose Visual Arts Guild 24th Annual Exhibition and Sale showing Oct. 8-11.  The show opens with a reception Thursday night from 6-8 PM.  It ends on Sunday at 3 PM.  Come out, view the show, and cast your ballot for People’s Choice.

For those patrons looking for gifts, the Guild will hold a special sale during the show.  Each artist can enter a maximum of 8 pieces, priced under $100.  I will show a few paintings and several monoprints.  Monoprints are one-of-a kind prints created from a master drawing.  They are painterly and produced by the hand of the artist, (unlike giclée prints, which are simply a photograph taken of a painting.)

A reception for artists, guests, award contributors, and patrons will be held Thurs., Oct. 8, from 6:00-8:00 PM.  This year’s juror is Colorado and Arizona artist, Cynthia Underwood.  She is a Master Signature Member of the Colorado Pastel Society and a Signature member of Plein Air Artists of Colorado.  Cynthia will present a FREE demonstration on Friday morning, Oct. 10, 10:00 at Camelot Gardens demonstrating in her impressionistic paintings where she pushes color. Dream Horses 3D

Sometimes ideas come and are quickly brought to fruition.  Sometimes an idea gestates before it takes material form.  The idea for my Dream Horses began last summer.  Before I could express them three dimensionally, I developed them in drawings and paintings.

Dream Horse #2
Dream Horse #2 “Walk Like an Egyptian” 14″x10″ $350

But actually I saw the three dimensional horses first.  Like the 2D versions, my new sculptural Dream Horses are stylized and leggy with strong geometric references and derivations from ancient cultures.  The techniques for these new horses evolved from my work with the clay fish.

See          https://cheriisgreenfineart.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/one-fish-two-fish-red-fish-blue-fish/

“Two Fish” copyright C Isgreen $65 (stoneware bas-relief sculpture, roughly 11″ x 10″)

Each horse begins with a set of four legs in two pairs.  I search my home landscaping for branches that suggest front legs and back legs.  The branches are sun-cured for several days before they are stable for use in the sculpture.

Next, a gestural drawing from heavy gauge copper wire is created.  This wire work serves as both a guide to the finished horse, as well as an armature to strengthen the sculpture.  Because the wooden legs are integral to the finished horse sculpture, I needed to find a medium that hardened without firing.  I began my prototypes by sculpting with air-dry clay.  This clay proved unsatisfactory, as it was too fragile to withstand the demands of sculpture. Through lots of experimenting, I’ve developed my own compound, (my secret recipe), that improves the durability of the sculpture.  The compound I use behaves much like fired stoneware.  When the form has evolved to my satisfaction, I finish my horses with carved geometric designs.  At this point, the horses must rest to cure.  After many days, the sculptures have hardened and are ready for the finishes.

I begin by applying a matt black paint to the entire surface of the sculpture.  Next I burnish with a metallic medium, carefully blending the colors to the effect I envision.  When the colors are balanced and desirable, I put several coats of clear acrylic glaze to enhance the colors and further protect the sculpture.

I finish with copper wire, in colors carefully selected to complement the surface design of each sculpture.  The wire is shaped and modeled, refining the personification of each horse’s spirit.
