More Collages

The Blue Pig in Palisade, Colorado is situated in the heart of wine and fruit country.  Several festivals have arisen, based on its agricultural roots, including the Honey Bee, Lavender, Wine, and Peach festivals.  To celebrate the vibrant agricultural environment, I have focused my collages for the Blue Pig along themes of plants and gardens.  Collages are created from my original artwork, embellished with a variety of found objects, and mounted on board.  The collages come in two formats: three 3″ square vertical triptychs and the larger 8″ patterned square.

Based on the success of last year’s collages at the GAC Holiday Market, I have started a new series for spring 2016.  I build my collages on wood substrate from an inspiration taken from my paintings and drawings.  I add found objects, then give the collage a quote or a border.  I love pattern- repeated shapes and coordinating colors.  My patterns are decorative and organic, evolving by hand.  Sometimes I add text when I feel the piece needs it.  Text complements visual objects by combining two forms of communication.  Maybe in the future, I may also add a sound track….

I do my collages in two formats.  The first examples show a single image on an 8″ square board.  The second format is a vertical triptych of three images mounted on 4″ square boards, linked with colored copper.

Now Showing at the Gunnison Arts Center

I have been invited to show with the Gunnison Arts Center Shop Artists.  The Arts Center Shop features the work from  about one dozen artists.  For the shop, I will feature my ceramic work: fish and 3D Dream Horse sculptures; mixed media collages; small paintings; and gifts: note cards, origami, and journals.  I will be at the shop on a monthly basis, as well as weekly in the summertime.

Gallery Update: the Blue Pig

The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade looks very festive with an array of fine artwork.  Kay has designed a Christmas corner where you can find handcrafted ornaments, Christmas cards, and other holiday-themed work.  Check out my origami horses, folded with metallic washi paper from Japan and hung with beaded wire hooks.  If you are a horse lover, you will find a collection of holiday horse Christmas cards from my original watercolor paintings.

The center of the gallery features the member artist show, “This Little Piggy,” a collection or miniature artworks suitable for gift giving.  My offering for this show is a collection of mixed media collages designed around prints from my original watercolor paintings.  Executed in a variety of themes from western landscape, horses, flowers, wild life, and Japanese themes, there is something for every decor and taste.  These small works measure 7.5″ square.  They are handcrafted on sturdy laminated paper substrate, embellished with ink, paint, and found objects.  As a prototype to the iconic collages showing at the Gunnison Arts Center, these smaller collages are offered at $20 through December.   More collages are on display in my “gallery pod.”

Mixed media collage on board was designed from a drawing in my sketchbook and printed on archival Reeves paper.  I see my collages as iconic with references and realia enhancing the original artwork.  For this piece, I included a tiny Queen of Hearts playing card and the key Alice is too tiny, and then too big to use.  The March Hare’s pocket watch was made from copper wire and bead, antiqued chain, and a metal watch face.  The border references Alice’s very psychedelic journey to Wonderland.  8” square panel  $40
